Sorry folks, Fat City has now left Manchester for somewhere called London?. See this news Item for more.
We’ll leave the page up for now. Fat City is still very much alive. You can still buy all the usual stuff from the online shop
Fatter than Oliver Hardy and Eddie Large sharing a family sized Toblerone, this shop is truly one of the Manchester greats. Fat City records have been at the heart of Manchester’s Soul, Funk, Hip Hop and Breaks n’ Beats scene for the past 15 years. As far as I can recall it all started with a store in Afflecks Palace and then moved into the present premises on Oldham Street. I have been crate digging in here for years and getting more recommendations than I can find shelf space for. Much more than just a shop, Fat City has driven and directed much of the local scene acting as promoters, DJs, producers and pioneers; resulting in the Fat City Shop, Record Label and Club Nights.
The shop has recently moved into the basement of the premises, somewhat hidden away beneath a clothes shop. Just head straight for the back and the side door down into the basement. This has been a recent move so it’s all a little chaotic at present but its coming together and I personally find a great joy in stepping over and shuffling round stacks of vinyl. A couple of listening posts are available (decks and CD player) and if they are occupied just ask the guys to play it for you.
The shop stocks around eighty percent Vinyl and specialises in Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, Beats, House, Edits, Reggae, Dubstep, Drum and Bass, Afro, Latin, Disco and even Folk. Expect all the main player labels like Warp, Soul Jazz, Tru Thoughts and Ubiquity. Fat City has excellent connections with some of the smallest distributors and labels which means that you will find stuff in here that you really cannot get anywhere else in the North never mind Manchester. Remember these guys play out all the time so they are always getting the latest nuggets straight into the shop and that means you get early copies of Mayer Hawthorne, Martyn, Debruit and Madlib releases as well as a finger aching selection of new 7″s from labels including Favourite, Stones Throw, Daptone, Record Breakin’ and Jazzman.
Chris or Johnny are generally working in the shop and two finer sources of grooves and beats it would be hard to find. Both guys are up to their freshly scrubbed necks in the scene and always happy to share their experience and vinyl wisdom with you.
Note the opening times if you’re making a special trip kids, at the moment Fat City is open Fridays and Saturdays only…its what weekends were invented for!
