“A wet Tuesday in Manchester. Drizzle, dogs, students, reflections and puddles. The wheel keeps turning and the diggers keep a digging. Fuelled by tea and that itch that doesn’t go away I plodded down Tib Street to check if the rumours on Beatin’ Rhythm were true. The glossy futurism of wood, scaffold and windows is empty. A simple sign “we have moved to 108 Tib Street”. So it’s onwards past the sex shops and due north towards where we once produced the national newspapers. There at the end on the right hand side sits the physical spirit of Northern Soul. It’s true Beatin’ Rhythm has moved but it’s heart is still in the right place. The new shop is smaller but still carries a stomach churning range of 7s along with stacks of CDs, magazines, T–shirts, books and more. The traditional counter crates of recommended tunes are in place and two listening posts are set against the back wall. It’s only the second day of trading but Carl and the guys are behind the counter sorting the boxes and stacking those 45s… All is well in the (new) world!
However forget for a moment all that material nonsense for what is truly most important is that the essence of joy and love for what the shop is and does remains as vibrant and true as ever. Keep on keeping on fellas!” Carl.
